November 2006

So, yesterday I wrote about the early morning wonders of Alaska. Today I want to share some special pictures from a co-worker Carol Gering that show you just how wonderful it can be at night. Once again, it is not really dark, just amazing… Check these out.

Three spectacular view of the Aurora Borealis or the “Northern Lights” taken by a wonderful photographer (not me :-) ). Scott and I have seen the lights, but not quite like this yet. We live to close to town, so will have to drive out a bit to get a really good view. However, we did enjoy a bit of a show as we sat in the hot tub the other night. It was quite a nice time. Looking forward to talking with many of you over the holidays. Take care and Happy Thanksgiving!

Each morning I get up and take Thor for a walk at about 6:30 am. Some may say, “Shauna, isn’t dark then? I hear it is always dark in Alaska. What about the cold…” Well, darkness I have found is relative. In Florida and in Colorado, when it got dark, it “really” got dark. Our yard in Florida required light to see a few feet in front of your face once the sun went down. In Alaska, it depends.

This morning for example. There was a beautiful orange and pink layer near the horizon at 6:30 am. This was not the sun coming up as it did not officially rise until 9:45 according AccuWeather.com. So, there was this great color in the sky all around the horizon in every direction. It was quite breath taking.

Then, you look up and you see a strikingly blue-black sky with millions of stars shining through. Not like what you would see near the city, but what you see in the mountains. The moon is not a full moon, but there is enough light reflected off the snow so Thor and I do not need a flashlight to take our morning walk. There is just enough snow right now to dust all the trees with powder making it rather enchanting.

All of this beauty together with the brisk (about -20 degree) temperature and you have a very satisfactory environment for enjoying the wonders of nature. At 6:30 am, the  neighborhood is just coming alive and all is well in Alaska!

I have discovered a new tool with some help from others here at CDE. It allows me to write to my blog at anytime. It may help me to keep up. This is a plugin for Firefox for those techies in the crowd. I am just testing today to see how it works. If it works well I plan to combine this tool and some others to help me “keep up” with what is happening around me in a more efficient way. Wish me luck :-)

As for what is up with us, not much. We are still waiting for the house to sell, still enjoying our jobs and playing a bit. It is getting colder (currently -8 degrees and partly cloudy) and darker (sunrise at 9 am sunset at 4pm), but we arre still getting outside on a daily basis. I think I am outside more here than I ever was in the heat of a Florida summer!

Well, gotta run so I can do some productive work. Take care all! - S&S
