Each morning I get up and take Thor for a walk at about 6:30 am. Some may say, “Shauna, isn’t dark then? I hear it is always dark in Alaska. What about the cold…” Well, darkness I have found is relative. In Florida and in Colorado, when it got dark, it “really” got dark. Our yard in Florida required light to see a few feet in front of your face once the sun went down. In Alaska, it depends.

This morning for example. There was a beautiful orange and pink layer near the horizon at 6:30 am. This was not the sun coming up as it did not officially rise until 9:45 according AccuWeather.com. So, there was this great color in the sky all around the horizon in every direction. It was quite breath taking.

Then, you look up and you see a strikingly blue-black sky with millions of stars shining through. Not like what you would see near the city, but what you see in the mountains. The moon is not a full moon, but there is enough light reflected off the snow so Thor and I do not need a flashlight to take our morning walk. There is just enough snow right now to dust all the trees with powder making it rather enchanting.

All of this beauty together with the brisk (about -20 degree) temperature and you have a very satisfactory environment for enjoying the wonders of nature. At 6:30 am, the  neighborhood is just coming alive and all is well in Alaska!
